How A Normally Open Solenoid Valve Works: An Engineering Explanation

A solenoid valve is a device used to control the flow of liquids or gasses. It is usually controlled by an electric current but can also be controlled by a pneumatic or hydraulic system.


Solenoid valves come in various shapes and sizes but have a similar basic structure. They typically consist of a coil of wire (the solenoid), a plunger, and a housing. When the current is turned on, the ring of wire creates a magnetic field that pulls the plunger towards the coil. This opens the valve and allows the liquid or gas to flow through. When the current is turned off, the plunger returns to its original position, closing the valve.


Two main types of solenoid valves are usually open and normally closed. A normally open solenoid valve is available when the current is off and closed when the wind is on. A normally closed solenoid valve is the opposite – it is completed when the draft is off and opens when the current is on.

Advantages and disadvantages of a normally open solenoid valve

Other types of solenoid valves

Three-way valves have three ports and can be used to control fluid flow between two ports. Three-way valves are available in normally open, normally closed, and universal configurations. Universal three-way valves can be used as either normally open or normally closed valves, depending on how they are wired.


Four-way valves have four ports and can be used to control the flow of fluid between two pairs of ports. Four-way valves are available in normally open and normally closed configurations.


Solenoid valves can also be classified according to their operating principle: direct acting, piloted, or diaphragm operated. Direct acting solenoid valves have a plunger that is actuated by the magnetic field created by the coil. Piloted solenoid valves have a separate pilot chamber containing a small plunger that activates the central plunger. Diaphragm-operated solenoid valves have a diaphragm that is actuated by the magnetic field created by the coil.


Solenoid valves can be made from various materials, including metals such as brass, stainless steel, and aluminum; plastics such as polypropylene and PVC; and composite materials such as fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). The choice of material depends on the application and the environment in which the valve will be used.
